Bittersweet November

Bittersweet, Gibbet Hill, Groton, MA

We visited Gibbet Hill in Groton, site of the ruins of Bancroft’s Castle, on a cold gray November day. The mountains of central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire were visible under the clouds, except for one, probably Mount Monadnock. Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus, an invasive species) provided about the only bright colors.

  1. Great photos, Peter. Oddly, this is one of my favorite times of year. Those silhouette trees! And I went to the link for Bancroft’s Castle — what a history.
